Your notes are yours.
Knotup is built to keep what you save on your Mac. Here’s exactly what data is involved — and what isn’t.
Last updated: October 8, 2026The short version
- What you save stays on your Mac. Knotup keeps your saved text and where it came from in a file on your computer. We never receive it.
- No account, no tracking. Knotup has no user accounts, no analytics and no advertising. This website sets no cookies.
- Only two things go online: checking your license key with our license server, and checking for app updates.
Who is responsible
The controller for processing personal data under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is:

The Knotup app
Your saved text
When you save something with Knotup, the app stores the selected text, the name of the app it came from, the window or chat title, the web address of the chat (if there is one) and the time. This data is stored only in a file on your Mac (in your user’s Application Support folder). It is never sent to us or anyone else. You can delete single items in the app or remove everything by deleting Knotup and that folder.
Accessibility access
Knotup asks for macOS Accessibility access. It uses it only on your Mac: to read the text you selected when you tap the save key, and to open the right chat and scroll to the saved spot when you click a task. Knotup does not record your screen and does not log what you type.
Free trial and license
The start date of your free trial and, after purchase, your license key are stored in the macOS Keychain on your Mac.
When you activate or deactivate a license, and about once a week to check that it’s still valid, Knotup sends your license key and a random activation ID to our license server at knotup.app (hosted by Vercel, see below). The server looks up your purchase at Stripe and stores the activation ID and its date with your purchase there, so that one key works on up to 3 Macs. As with any internet connection, your IP address is transmitted. We use this only to verify your license (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR — performance of the contract).
Update checks
Knotup checks for new versions by downloading a small update file from our website (knotup.app). This request includes your IP address and, like any app request, the app and macOS version in the user agent. We do not send any other system information and we don’t use this data to identify you (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR — our legitimate interest in delivering security and bug-fix updates). Knotup checks automatically, about once a day, and when you choose “Check for updates…” in Settings.
Buying Knotup
Knotup is sold through Link, Stripe’s checkout (Sold through Link, LLC, a Stripe company), which acts as the merchant of record. When you buy, Stripe processes your email address, billing details and payment details to handle the payment, taxes, invoices and refunds. Stripe is responsible for this processing under its own privacy policy. Stripe may process data in the United States.
We receive the order details we need to deliver and support your purchase — such as your email address, country, the product you bought and your license key — and keep them as long as we are required to by commercial and tax law (generally up to 10 years in Germany). After checkout, our thank-you page shows your license key, and we send it to your email address (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
We send this email through Brevo (Sendinblue GmbH, Köpenicker Str. 126, 10179 Berlin, Germany), which processes your email address and the message on our behalf under a data processing agreement.

Hosting
This website and Knotup’s update files are hosted by Vercel Inc., 440 N Barranca Ave #4133, Covina, CA 91723, USA. When you visit, Vercel automatically processes technical data that your browser sends — your IP address, the date and time, the page you requested, your browser and operating system — in server log files. This is necessary to deliver the website and keep it secure (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Vercel keeps these logs only for a short time.
Vercel processes data on our behalf under a data processing agreement. Data may be processed in the USA; the transfer is based on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and, where applicable, the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. More in Vercel’s privacy policy.
Contacting us
If you email us, we use your email address and message only to answer you (Art. 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR) and delete them when they’re no longer needed, unless we have to keep them by law.
Your rights
You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and to object to processing based on legitimate interests. You can withdraw any consent at any time with effect for the future. Just email hi@ostrine.com.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, for example the Hessian Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (HBDI) in Wiesbaden, Germany.

If Knotup or this website changes in a way that affects your data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
